What should I do when I feel sick?
When you feel sick, it is important for you to:
- Continue to take your diabetes medicines as usual. Only skip your mealtime insulin if you are not eating meals.
- Check your blood glucose at least every 3-4 hours. See images below for what to do if your blood glucose is below 70 (low blood glucose) or above 180 mg/dL (high blood glucose).
- Drink plenty of water if your blood glucose is high or if you are nauseous, vomiting, or having diarrhea.
- Try to keep eating at least small meals if you can.
Call your healthcare team if you cannot eat or drink or if you continue to have diarrhea or vomiting.
